I now understand the importance of holding. No, I'm not talking about two lovers caressing each other tightly in front of a fireplace (although that is also certainly important, fireplace or not). I'm talking about being put on hold when doing business over the phone. I recently took my automobile in to be serviced at my local garage. After they had it for a day, I called to get the prognosis and see just how much this was going to cost me. I was transferred over to the mechanic working on my car, and by transferred; I mean that the first person I reached yelled at the top of her lungs for a second person to pick up line 2. It was endearing, in a way, but not terribly professional.

After reaching the mechanic, I was told to wait for a moment while he checked on the status of my car. He then put the phone down (or let it hang, for all I know) and went to get the paperwork. It took him quite a while to get the information he needed, so I was sitting at my desk at work with my ear to the receiver, listening to other mechanics talk about everything under the sun. I certainly don't mind that, but the profanity I was hearing didn't really instill any confidence in me that I had chosen the right garage for my vehicle. These guys could have made a sailor blush, as the saying goes. Eventually, the mechanic came back and told me the amount of the bill and what they had found. (more...)

Do you save your documents and spreadsheets into your computer’s My Documents (or Documents depending on your version of Windows) folder? While this folder is intended for storing an individual user’s files in one central place, simply accepting the default folder can lead to a disorganized file system where you may have to scroll through thousands of files to find the one you are looking for. Much like a kitchen’s junk drawer soon becomes disorganized and filled with clutter, your My Documents folder soon becomes unwieldy.

A better way to organize your documents is to create your own set of folders and subfolders. You can either start with the My Documents folder and then create different subfolders or you can create your own primary folders such as Personal Documents and Business Documents. What are File Associations?

A computer knows how to work with thousands of different file types because it contains an index that tells it which programs are associated with which types of files. More than one program can be associated with any given file format. For example, PhotoShop and Microsoft Paint are both capable of opening .jpeg files. However, only one can be the “default program.” In fact, depending on which version of Windows you are running, one of the ways that you can manage your computer’s file associations is through a utility named “Default Programs.”

Why Do File Associations Break?

Computers are dynamic machines, constantly changing. You add new software, apply operating system and program updates, add new devices, update device drivers, and interact with others online. Each of these activities alters the computer’s configuration. It’s not uncommon to install a new application and accept its default settings. The only trouble is, some setup programs are programmed to change your computer’s settings so that the new application becomes the new default program for certain file types. For example, if you install a new photo editing program, it may suddenly become the new default program for any type of graphic.
